I feel terrible - just terrible, that I have let my postings go for so long without any updates. For those of you still checking in and for anyone new who finds there way here - I'm working on something new. For the past year I have been hard at work creating Covet Garden - an on-line magazine I started with two friends. Please check it out, we have been receiving great press and we are thrilled that it has taken off so quickly.

As for Lily, she is just great and a constant source of happiness in my life.

Hot off the presses, the September issue of Canadian Living magazine featuring - me and my house of crazy stuff. Imagine my delight when I was contacted by editor Karen Kirk saying they wanted to do a feature on me and my digs. Well, more specifically, my possessions. It's a great read (if I do say so myself) so run don't walk to your nearest newsstand and get a copy.
Perhaps it is because my work in both interior design and prop styling requires that I report on and shop for the newest decor trends that for my own home I prefer the old, well-loved, full of character, and unusual things I don’t see everyday or in magazines that just make me smile. My Aunt Vi and Uncle Chet started to recognize my love for antiques and such years ago when during one of my visits to their home in Cape Cod we hit some antique shows. Antique dealers themselves they loved that I was so interested in so many things and started to send me “guess what this is” presents for holidays. They always found the perfect thing to keep me guessing such as a glove stretcher, a chainmail pot scrubber, cherry pitter, and last year it was a counter mount nutmeg grinder that is easily 200 years old along with a lovely Victorian sterling silver tea strainer which was part of my aunt’s collection. My work still keeps me sourcing the latest decor styles but my new project lets me marry my love for unique finds with that current aesthetic. While still working as a prop stylist, my newest project covetgarden.com, (which September 1) is an intimate look into the homes and lives of Canadians with inspirational style.

Well actually I always have something to say - whose kidding who - so let me start by saying - thanks Shannon. It is always such a nice feeling when other folks like what I do. While on set the other day with photographer Tracy Shumate, she showed me the fall lookbook for J.Crew. All I can say is, 'hello J. Crew, what have you been doing because you look fabulous.' If you haven't checked them out recently I highly recommend it if only to drool over the fabulous styling and the beautifully excessive use of brooches.

A couple of weeks ago my friend Yvonne - from Pistil Flowers - and I were discussing films. I was telling her about my passion for period piece dramas - Jane Campion films in particular. I love the imagery, I can watch The Piano and Bright Star over and over and over again. Yvonne suggested I rent the Hong Kong love story In The Mood For Love which I did and man oh man what a freakin' beautiful movie. Mad Men - shmad men that is what I say. This film is 60's perfection. I had it for five days and watched it six times before returning. It is complete eye candy, the outfits, the set decor (including some amazing wallpaper and light fixtures) and the sound track featuring Nat King Cole singing Spanish - this movie has it all. And, like with most things I love this movie inspired me to look at outfits I'd wear if I were Mrs Chan and here is what I came up with. If you haven't seen this movie run out and rent it - as for me, I'll be buying my own copy .

Sometimes inspiration comes from the most unlikely places. Take for example these stunning images of moths I found the other day. I think mother nature is quite the fashion designer because these moths have incredible outfits! And, almost as stunning - but much easier to access - these fabulous finds. First, this beautiful photo by Glynis Arban. Followed by a dress to die for and one sweet clutch bag by Roberta Freymann. Then I saw this carpet bag and thought of my friend Alexx - coincidentally Alexx loves moths - and green as well as carpet bags - what are the chances. I had to find a dress inspired by her moth muse and saw this vintage Cacharel Liberty print dress on Etsy - really it is all to perfect.

I actually have some idea but still - two months?I have been thinking about my friends Ashley & Paul's upcoming wedding. I'm so excited for them and so very happy to be doing their flowers. So, many days spent looking at flowers and getting inspiration and this is just a taste.

Sometimes I get a job that just requires me to shop and drop. This was the case with my last gig for Clean Eating magazine. I shopped for what they wanted and dropped it off at photographer Edward Pond's for shooting. Later, I saw these pics on Edwards facebook page. Let me introduce food stylist Ashley Denton. Here's Ashley working away from behind a large foam core wall, I have never really seen this technique before, at least I am assuming it is a technique and not just some cruel work standard that Edward imposes on all his stylists.

Sometimes I forget how much I like my home. I get so caught up in other peoples stuff, shopping for stuff and writing about stuff that it slips my mind. The other day photographer and friend Jodi Pudge asked if she could shoot a couple of things in my home and of course I said yes. When I look at these pictures they make me smile. I don't have a house full of designer objects in carefully laid-out, newly- renovated rooms, but I do have a space which I'm happy to be in. Sometimes I forget this because work is too busy or work is too slow but when Jodi took these pictures it allowed me to see what she sees, what I sometimes don't see, my house is pretty darn fabulous.

This post is a serious one but I feel this needs to be written. Lily and I have been together 17 months now and she tugs on my heart strings and makes me smile every day. I never thought I'd be able to have an animal in my life because of my allergies and asthma but that was before I learned that I'm not allergic to chihuahuas - go figure. Unfortunately, not knowing a thing about breeders and what to ask, my experience was not a positive one. This blog is for people looking to bring a chihuahua - or any dog for that matter - into their lives and are considering a breeder. If your experience was a positive one, I'm happy for you, but that was not my experience. I would have preferred to support a shelter but I quickly learned that chihuahuas rarely enter that system so it was a pet store or breeder if I wanted one. After learning a friend - and fellow chihuahua lover - was purchasing a new puppy from a breeder she had heard of I was so excited that I asked for the breeders info. This breeder - BuddysRus - in London Ontario comes highly recommended and is listed in Modern Dog magazine. BuddysRus is also an award winning breeder associated with the Canadian Kennel Club - sounds good right? Unfortunately, Lily was not a puppy when I got her. Lily was already a year and a half old and because she was considered - by BuddysRus owner Debbie Eckenstein - not "breed perfect" she was looked over by potential buyers. I was told she was in perfect health with the exception of her weight - which was a little on the high side - so it would be best if she lost a pound or so. Debbie brought Lily, my friends puppy, and a few other puppies to the Toronto dog show sponsored by The Canadian Kennel Club held at the International Centre in the fall of 2008 so I could have a look at them all. Once I saw Lily I was in love and so I purchased her that day - I have since learned that this is not permitted - the the selling of dogs at this event. I mention this because I feel - in my opinion - it is an insight into the credibility of this breeder. I e-mailed Debbie several times during the first few weeks I had Lily, to let them know she and I were fine, and how much I loved her. I also asked Debbie - several times - about Lily's legs because she appeared to walk cautiously especially on certain surfaces. Debbie assured me that Lily was fine and - again - just needed to drop some weight. Once I received Lily's vet records from BuddysRus, I made an appointment with a well known Toronto vet, Doctor Sam Munn. After handling Lily he told me Lily had petella luxation in both her hind legs, an ex ray was done to confirm this finding. Of course Lily's vet records from BuddysRus had not mentioned this but that is because according to those records, Lily saw their vet once - for her puppy shots, and not again during her year and a half with them. I tried contacting this London vet but didn't hear back from him. Also, Debbie's vet was emailed Doctor Munn's findings as per Debbie's request - of course these findings "meant nothing" according to Debbie. I can only assume and this is just my opinion, it is because Debbie at BuddysRus is not a qualified veterinarian and had not seen Lily's difficulty with walking as anything to look into so it was wrongly assumed this was because of her weight - which was clearly not being addressed. I can't help but feel - in my opinion - it was because they knew that the likely hood of Lily selling was slim so they didn't invest in the the medical attention she needed. Lily had not even been spayed - again - Lily was a year and half old when I got her. BuddysRus denies Lily's diagnosis of petella luxation from the two veterinarians I took her to see. And, even if they did agree (they said) they were not going to do anything about the surgery Lily needs. Might I add that petella luxation in over weight puppies is common. So, lets recap, I was sold a dog at an event where this practice was not allowed. I was told my dog was in top health except for needing to loose some weight. And, once it was discovered Lily needed surgery - and a costly surgery at that - BuddysRus - said that it is not their responsibility nor do they guarantee any of their dogs once they are sold - even if they completely misinformed me about the health of their dog during the purchase. Also, let me state that two vets saw Lily with in the first month I had her - both said - in their opinion - that her problem had existed for a while and they could tell that by the inflammation around her joints which turned up in the ex ray that was taken, two separate appointments, same diagnosis. And, they both said that Lily being allowed to gain weight while under the breeders care - more than likely and in their opinion - could be the reason she had this problem. Debbie's last email to me said they'd call the police if I e-mailed her anymore - I invite her to do so as I'd love to discuss with the police and anyone else who'd be interested my experience. So, if you are looking into breeders please oh please, do your research and do not be fooled by Canadian Kennel Club papers or prize-breed awards as this all means nothing when you have fallen in love with your dog and then find out that your dog was sick when you got her. Also, I did contact The Canadian Kennel Club regarding this and they said they would look into it but that most likely nothing would be done as the actions of breeders - even breeders associated with them - has nothing to do with their organization - nice. You should also know that Lily has her papers as a pure bred chihuahua and is recognized by the Canadian Kennel Club - this means nothing really - in my opinion it's just some bells and whistles to help justify the cost of a dog but means nothing in terms of quality of health or guarantees of any kind, or the credibility of a breeder.
All this being said, I love Lily and if going through all of this was what had to happen for us to have one another than I'm glad it happened. And, I am glad that Lily is with me, getting the love and care she deserves and was deprived before coming into my life.

Today's happiness is brought to you by chips, chocolate, and Earl. First, covered bridge kettle chips. I loves me a good kettle chip and when I saw these came in an adorable burlap sack - well need I say more. Then, I saw these Dolfin chocolate bars. Smaller than their regular bars which makes buying a few supper affordable. Also, they have introduced a few new must-try-flavours like, peppercorn from Brazil and green tea with jasmine (not in photo because - well - I ate it). And last but not least - Earl - nuff said.

Today my friend and jewelry expert Rhonda Riche from one of my most favourite blogs - graciousgood - suggested we meet up at Toronto Antiques on King as a start to my attempt to try and sell my grandmother's china. After chit-chatting to a dealer about my china, Rhonda and I looked and many. many lovely jewelery pieces. Oh so many things to dream about including the above hand painted fly ring. I'm going to guess and say it is Victorian, I could be wrong here as Rhonda is the expert not me. Isn't it fabulous, I love, love love it.
I'm also quite smitten with this cameo necklace. Full-bodied cameos are rare ( I learned today) and the chain, too sweet. After we finished spending our imaginary money, we went over to Queen street and popped into a vintage store where Rhonda couldn't help but place G.I Joe in front of this landscape painting, looks like he is really there doesn't it, hut - huh?

Okay, so the Toronto Design snore - I mean show - was a couple of weeks ago. My friend Jess and I decided to go check it out and basically we were both disappointed. Too many taps and fireplaces not enough 'new'. Also, for some bizarre reason, more than a few booths decided to play loud 2000 club music. There were a few things I liked well enough to snap some photos starting with Jess holding a note book titles, fuck you and your blog which cracked us both up. Loved the dresser from north on sixty made out of reclaimed barn board. A beautiful 6 foot long pine cone made from weathering steel. Gorgeous wood and ceramic "But-tee" lamps in every colour by Tahir Mahood - f anyone is wondering to get me for my birthday - look no further. And, Heidi Earnshaw's handcrafted wall unit filled with lovely treasures.

I spent this weekend rearranging my living room and dining room. Not the furniture, but all my stuff. Countless scales, plants, little ceramic thingys, all under the careful eye of Lily. And, while I'm certain this will not happen, I really should stop shopping for 'things'. I think it is safe to say that I have more than enough 'things' in my life. I wonder how long I can go without bringing home another 'thing', let see, it is January 31 so lets just wait and see if I can go at least a month or two - wish me luck.

I woke up dreaming of the delicious food of my neighbourhood brunch place, Lady Marmalade.
Last time I was there I had a head cold so I ordered a spicy heavous dish and it was fabulous. Around the table was also french toast and poached BLTs and the most delicious earl grey tea I have ever had, made even better by the sweet tea cup it came in.

I was on Queen west the other day and walked by MacFab where they are having a huge clearance sale - seeings how they are moving to Queen and Broadview soon. Any way, I could not resist scooping up some Amy Butler fabric at 50% off. And, after being inspired by these lovely Amy Butler bags I have decided that I need a new spring bag and since I have an Amy Butler pattern that I have not yet used it is fate.

Okay, so it has been a while but I'm back. I had every intention of blogging before now but December was crazy-busy and then my hard drive died and took with it everything including every photo I had taken for the last three years. And yes, I should have backed-up but I didn't and I now know what all the fuss is about and so let my disaster be a lesson to you all back-up people I beg you. Back in October I wrote about going to Americo where I bought the most gorgeous wool ever and this is what I made - a big ol' cowl wide enough to pull up over my head if a hood is needed. My friend and fellow blogger - Lois of hellogirlthursday asked for the pattern and made one too. Lois stuck to the pattern and continued the rib stitch through-out where as I got frustrated and said to heck with that and just knit mine, as you can see Lois's looks much nicer - I think - but I love mine regardless. Okay, so I have knit my cowl and to go with it I found a lovely blue plaid jacket at Value Village - $2.99 - and I'm loving my ode to lumberjacks and then I get my Martha Stewart magazine in the mail and I'm looking through it and what do I see but some girl (with fabulous taste) sporting a BLUE PLAID JACKET AND COWL. I was robbed - robbed I tell you.

Sure, I have met celebrities before. When I was a personal shopper at Holt Renfrew I had to work with A-listers all the time. Some where nice, some not so nice, one in particular was just wacko but I was never star-struck perhaps because I never worked with anyone I truly liked. Then, there was my infamous encounter with Drew Barrymore in my hood at Pulp Kitchen. That was a great moment, I saw Drew as soon as I entered the place and pretended not to look over at her. Then, she came up to me, Drew Barrymore came up to me and told me she loved - not liked - but LOVED my outfit. I'm pretty sure I was blushing and gushing but she was adorable and sweet and I couldn't wait to leave and phone everyone I knew. Okay, so yesterday I was working away making a flower arrangement for the King Edward Hotel and in walks...Rachael Mcadams. I was star-struck all over again. I love her, loved her in Mean Girls - a movie I still watch regularly with my niece Sydney, loved her in The Notebook - I know it's a sappy Kleenex-fest but who doesn't like that movie, and I loved her in The Family Stone mainly because she is a bitch to Sarah Jessica Parker but also because she is Rachael Mcadams, and The Time Traveller's Wife -just one of my favourite books ever! After talking with her - that's right I said talking with her and her parents and helping her with plant-questions (she was buying one for her bedroom) I had to let it out and tell her I loved her, and I did, I said,"by the way, I don't want to bother you but I love you". She was totally sweet and said thank you and we had a moment - I felt it. What can I say, she is cute as a button and she was with her parents - I like this girl. And, I will show my support of her when Sherlock Holmes hits the theatres, costumes, Robert Downey Jr., intrigue, and Rachael Mcadams.

I've noticed a lot of changes with my body this year. I turned 45 and almost overnight my eye sight went. I picked up a prescription bottle the other day and I couldn't read it. I even did the ol' stretch out my arm but my arm wasn't long enough to focus-in on the type. There are a couple of other things I have discovered too but because they relate to bladder function I don't feel I need to go into details. So, I have decided I need to embrace my age and think about the kind of lady I'd like to be as I get older and these two woman are a true inspiration. They have style and grace and fabulous floral outfits, no stretch pants and knee-highs for these dames no sir.

When I saw these little pillow-pins from depeapa my first thought was, it's Lily! and, like Lily, it is just the cutest little thing, I love it.

Sleepy, so sleepy. Lily still thinks we are on day light savings time and wakes up promptly at 6:40 every morning. This isn't so bad most mornings but today I really, really wanted another hour of sleep but once I'm up there is no goings back. Couple this lack of sleep with the fact that it is foggy outside - no sun what so ever and, well, all I can think of are beds, big, comfy, come sleep in me-beds. And, the first one comes courtesy of Anthropolgie Toronto, it was all I could do to keep myself from crawling into it.

I feel guilty that I have been loving the warm fall weather that we have had. I think I can hear polar bears crying as there ice cap-homes melt into the ocean and what I am I doing, sitting outside with a beer enjoying this sunny 20 degree November day. Ah Halloween, the candy, the kids, the scary decorations - I missed it all because I was sick with the flu. Around 6:15 Halloween night I could here all the little ones on my street running around and laughing but I was on my sofa with a fever coughing up a lung. So I'd like to pay homage to Halloween and a few kids I know who made me smile. First up Logan, who is this cute and adorable on a daily basis. Second up is Jacques, Jacques' dad is my friend and a photographer Daniel Harrison and I if you know Daniel then you know this picture of his cute little boy's first Halloween is just one of many more to come. Last, but oh so far from least is Bella. Unlike most of her cousins and friends who wanted to dress up as princesses, Bella wanted to be Buzz Lightyear. I like this kid, she is an original, an independent thinker, a "be" not a wanna-be.

Spent some time checking out stuff at the piecework textile show at the Gladstone hotel yesterday. Two artists in particular caught my eye, the first, Anna Zygonski. Anna screen prints her illustrations on reclaimed fabric and sweater pieces to create mitts of various styles that are unique and affordable. Second, Nathalie + Terra of Fluf sustainable designs made from chemical-free hemp, organic cotton and wool. Their bags and pillows were pure eye candy for me plus, you can buy their fabric from their studio.

I can't believe that I am actually and finally feeling better. The last nine days were filled with coughing, sneezing, sleeping, coughing, sweating, sleeping - you get the picture. During this time I thought about a lot of things - most of them unimportant - however this one thought kept haunting me. If I were to die, how long would it take before someone became suspicious and found my body. I never worried about this before because I always had someone in my life - a friend or fella - who I spoke to daily and so if a day went by when there was no contact a red flag went up. I realize that although I have many friends in my life that I don't have that daily contact with any one person. I am not afraid of dying but I have Lily now and the idea of her being alone until someone found my body is terribly upsetting. I told this to my friend and neighbour Katy and, God love her, she has called me several times since to see how I was feeling. I'm sure she thinks I'm crazy but I need to know that someone will be on top of this so if I were to die suddenly that someone would find Lily and take care of her and find my body before I start to decompose and smell too badly.

new boots, new yarn, and a new haircut

This was one perfect day. I decided to do a little shopping before heading over to get my hair cut and it was success all-round. First stop, Get Outside on Queen west to look for much needed winter boots. I knew I wanted Sorels but which ones? After trying on four different styles I settled on the caribou's in slate - bring on the snow 'cause I'm ready. Then, I went into Americo at 577 Queen street west. If you have never been, please oh please make the trip. This is a Canadian yarn company which carries high-end, all natural fiber yarns produced for them in the Andean highlands of south America. And, if yarn isn't your thing, they also have gorgeous blankets, throws, cushion covers, merino wool fabric by the metre, handbags, and the best selection of trimmings and notions. Finally, I went to The Cabinet Salon for a much needed hair appointment. The Cabinet Salon is the creative collaboration of Emma Rose and Alex Macdonald. Emma has cut my hair for the past five or so years and when she was unavailable, Alex stepped in. It goes without saying that I am so happy that they have joined forces and opened their own business. The space is gorgeous, light-filled and welcoming - just like Emma and Alex.

While packing up fabric for a job the other day I came across these and decided I should make something out of them. The yellow fabric is a small sample piece and the other is a vintage table cloth. I have yet to use the yellow piece - I think it will become a blanket for Lily. But, with the crazy poinsettia-print table cloth I made Lily new bedding for her basket. It turns out that Lily has a love for vintage fabric too.

My friend Sarah has been in Cambodia for almost a year. She has been in Kampot town, a small fishing village in the south that we stumbled across and fell in love with while we were traveling together 2 years ago. Recently, Sarah has gotten sick and in order to see a doctor she had to travel 6 hours north to the city of Phon Phem. Sarah's last letter was not about how she was feeling or the amount of traveling she had to do to see a doctor but how much she loved having to stay in a hotel with soft pillows and a comfortable bed. Okay, I have a girl crush on Penelope Cruz. My feelings were cemented when I saw her in Vicky Cristina Barcelona. She was brilliant, so brilliant in fact that I felt almost sorry for Scarlett Johansson because she was not even close to okay - trying to keep up with P's firey, passionate character, it was sad. I love Penelope even more because she is with Javier Bardem - finally a real man, a beautiful man not like the moment in time when she was with Tom Cruise (we all have are bad days). And, now Penelope is about ready to explode all over the big screen in 3 new movies. First, she will be appearing in the new Sex in the City - not a lead role but an important role and she be all Latina and fantastic. Then, Broken Embraces (top photo), not a great movie but what it lacks in story it more then makes up for with fabulous set design - complete eye candy. And then there is Nine - out December 25 - I can't wait. Also starring Daniel Day Lewis, Judy Dench, Nicole Kidman and Marion Cotillard. Sadly, some how Kate Hudson also slipped her insipid self into this movie which is a big ol' head-scratcher to me but I'm certain she'll simply fade into the background of the other wonderful performances.

Although contemporary design is something I truly appreciate it's a little too cold and impersonal for my taste. That being said I am ga-ga over this design, in particular the garage door-style wall which opens flat to the ceiling expanding the inside-out. My friends Rhonda and Scott are renovating their home and I am going to suggest they implement this idea. And, yes I am aware that our Canadian weather and wildlife might not lend itself well to this concept but Rhon loves squirrels and so having them running around her living room hiding peanuts (most likely given to them by Rhonda) before the snow falls might be considered a plus.

Today was an exceptionally fine day. It started with a few hours soaking in the many waters at The Body Blitz spa with one of my best friends-Rhonda. We were so relaxed that we were actually light-headed when we left and in need of food so we checked out Sadie's Diner and juice bar a new spot at 504 Adelaide street west. I had the huevos rancheros, Rhon had the breakfast burrito and we both had the chocolate, peanut butter, banana smoothie ( actually Rhon had two) and who could blame her because they were delicious. Actually, everything was great: the company, the food, the decor ( I am coveting a paint by number of John Wayne), the service, everything.

Last night I went to a press event for Nadege a most wonderful patisserie at 780 Queen street west. Executive chef and co-owner, Nadege, is as delightful as her product which includes, pastries, artisan sandwiches - on their own fresh baked bread, teas, beautifully designed sweets that are almost too pretty to eat, a wide selection of flavoured marshmallows, but my favourite has to be the macarons. Imagine light, crisp cookie wafers sandwiching a variety of thick and creamy ganches. I suggest trying the poppy, and rose - truly the best thing I have had in a while. Why I didn't I bring some home - I blame the free champagne.

I love fall, I love the cool air, the smell of leaves, and even the crazy wind we have been experiencing that has knocked my tomato plants over on my deck several times smashing the last of it's green fruit. Today I made roasted squash soup and my two sweet friends Rhonda - of the blog graciousgoods - and Jessica came over for lunch. I love that our schedules allowed for us to meet on a Tuesday afternoon - a Tuesday afternoon - how lucky is that. Jess updated us on lil' Sophie's skills at cooking (sort of) and her decision to boycott toilet training - I can't believe she is going to be 2 soon. Rhonda told us she spent yesterday dressed as a zombie and wandering the subway promoting the movie Zombieland. Life is good.

Today I was introduced to some of the new creations of Toronto artist Heather Marchand. You should really check out her website to see all she has done. Her work is ethereal, complex, fluid, sometimes furry, and to some, a wee bit gross. I personally have a bit of a crush on this little heart made from bathing suit liner and plastic tubing. I wish it came brooch-size so I could wear it around on my sleeve and other places.

Sometimes you need to inject a little silly into your work day. It all started when we discovered that the mini marshmallows I was propping with were not only Kosher but also contained fish. And, as if that wasn't enough, I was also surprised to see that stylist Lee's Toronto Blue Jay's hat collection - 9 in total - had grown to included purple, to match his purple plaid shirt and boxers (you'll have to take my word on that part). Then, a green fragile rock-like pillow made it's way into the heart of Sabine and Tim.

I felt like a little ice cream today and now that our neighbourhood has Cream the Urban Dairy - conveniently located a block from my house - I went on over to see what they had. This is truly the best ice cream I have ever had. Made from scratch, their flavours are a unique and refreshing change from the norm. Today I saw a new flavour that I had to try, okay sit down and get ready for this, french toast ice cream with candied bacon sprinkles (which of course they make themselves) I don't know how to properly describe this most delicious mouth treat but it was fabulous, really fab-u-lous!

Maybe it is all this rain. This year not only have I managed to get sweet peas to flower but my helleborus flowered. It has been three years - three years of me waiting, feeding, watering, waiting some more for just a hint of a flower and nothing until this year - ta-da! I'm confused.
The first sign is located on the window of Chows hardware store around the corner from my house. Not only is terribly specific, not 45 but 48 minutes, it has been up for 4 days.
The other was posted at Brickwork's farmer's market. I'm thinking given the dangerous circumstance that warrant this signage, perhaps a once over for spelling might have been suggested - just a thought.

Yesterday it rained like crazy - thunder, lightening, more thunder and then more lightening. When it was all I went out side and discovered that one of my hydrangea bushes was pretty much flattened from the weight of the rain water. I almost cried but then I realized only a few branches were actually broken the rest just needed a gentle shaking off. So, the injured were brought inside to the dining room table next to my glorious air-fern. Then, this morning I went out on my back deck and there was this little sweet-pea. I've never been able to get sweet-peas to flower before. Sadly, the stem was broken - I'm guessing rain or raccoon - so, in the house it came.

Not too long ago I posted a picture of a dress that I have and hope to one day get into again. Then, my sweet friend Alexx called me and said that she had an inspirational dress too and this is it. She bought it hoping that it would fit her someday. Well, after much hard work - including treacherous long distance bike rides - her lovely tree-dress fits perfectly. Who gets vertigo - me that's who. It took me by surprise today, I went downstairs to get something and went back upstairs and the hall was spinning and I felt incredibly nauseous. I had to lie down, lie down and try not cry because vertigo is scary stuff. I called my friend Katy - who has a key - and asked her to come over and bring me gravol (because I couldn't move to get it myself) so I could sit up and not puke. My other friend Rhonda is popping over. She said she wouldn't wear her striped T-shirt in case that makes me dizzy... and that she'd move slowly. I love my friends. There really is no other reason for this post except that I was feeling a little sorry for myself and now I realize my life is pretty darn great. Vertigo - not so good, friends - exceptional.

Her work is beautiful and this book is a look into 50 Paris shops that feature made by hand clothing, jewelry, ceramics, and more. Second is one divine linen apron from Yumiko Sekine founder of Fog Linen Work. Fog Linen Work objects are produced in Lithuania where flax has been grown for generations. I was just looking at my friend Patti's etsy page - Dervish - where she has (amongst many other fabulous things) a copy of this Better Homes and Gardens from 1970. With some exceptions like the rather large legs on the coffee table and the parquet flooring, this room isn't that bad. And, clearly some designers out there thought so too because this colour combo has been all the rage for the last several months, (top photo from this months House & Home magazine for example).
This vintage Home and Garden magazine also has directions for making your own beaded pom-pom curtain so I'm thinking it is just a matter of time before we start seeing those around. I'm temped to buy this magazine and start mass producing these curtains now - any buyers?

The other day I was on the phone gabbing away to a friend when I glanced out my window and saw this in my backyard. It took me a few seconds to figure it out. Apparently the building behind me called a junk removal business and this is their truck parked right next to my back fence. Because of the sun and the position of the truck all I saw was monkey, it made my day.

I have long been a fan of the Mercury Espresso Bar in my hood, not just because I know the owners, but because it is, by far, the best coffee in the area. I just found out that recently Mercury has partnered with Ed's Real Scoop - best ice cream in the area - to create Mercury Espresso ice cream. I went by Ed's to sample it and man oh man it does not disappoint and, if you prefer something even more grown-up, Ed's has a mojito gelato that rocks.

Just got back from the Brick Works Market where I came across this new soap from soap maker Elaine Gaynor of one cloud9 called Muskoka. This is now my favourite new soap. It smells of juniper and lime and one sniff instantly transports me to a deck chair on a dock somewhere where I'm relaxing with a gin and tonic and nothing but the sound of crickets to listen too.
I also sampled and then purchased a Trappist style cheese called Niagara Gold from Provincial Fine Foods. This is one buttery-good cheese and well worth the $10.00 price.
Finally, I picked up a bag of sea asparagus just because they are so cute and unusual. I'm thinking a lite sauteing in butter and lime and then served with grilled salmon perhaps.

I have decided that just because I've gone back to the gym doesn't mean that I can't have a treat once in a while. This week I chose a most delicious carrot cupcake (because carrots are healthy and good for your eyes and all that).
The other day I celebrated my birthday with my sweet friend Jasmine. My birthday was actually in March but I didn't feel much like celebrating back then and once I did feel like it Jazz broke her leg which had her out of commission for a while. Fast-forward, last week we got together and Jazz had a lovely bouquet of white roses for me. Having them around my house was a constant reminder that I someone was thinking of me and that is the best gift ever.

I recently found out that a friend of a friend (you know who you are) decided to start collecting paint by numbers because they liked my collection so much. At first I was quite miffed because there aren't a lot of paintings around these days and so the idea of having competition in the collecting arena was aggravating. I have since relaxed a bit. And, I can totally understand wanting them around because they really do make me smile, and if they can make someone else smile by having their own then that is a mighty nice thing indeed.

I have had some time on my hands as of late and it has given me the opportunity to really examine some of my choices. Over the last year and a half I mastered the art of letting myself go. Like many people who have a personal battle with food, I have lost about 125 pounds and gained at least 150. Not all at once mind you but slowly over the last 25 years. This last period (about a year and a half) I have hit an all time personal high - and no, I will not being sharing that number. Recently I started back at the gym and it has not been easy. Long gone are the days when I was younger and a couple of weeks of sensible eating and sweating it out on the treadmill resulted in a 12 pound weight loss. This weight doesn't want to budge, it wants to stick around to see just how serious I am about taking it off once and for all. This is okay - not ideal - but okay. I lost 5 pounds in my first 2 weeks and let me tell you I was thrilled. Then, got on the scale 2 weeks after that and nothing, not one pound, zippo changeo. I am going to be honest I cried - a lot - and then I went to the gym. So, in order to help keep myself focused I took a picture of a dress that I have had and not worn in 2 years, it is beautiful non. I love this dress and I will get into it again and by sharing this I hope to remain strong and forgiving but most of all self-loving.

My friend Lois has a new blog - hellogirlthursday - I love it for many reasons but here is my latest. Lois took this picture and she writes, "Found this hiding behind some rinds of parmigiano in my freezer tonight. Yes, of course I ate it". I don't know of many people who happen to have rinds of cheese in their freezer, mainly because it is eaten in the first day or two of buying it, am I right or is this just with me. Clearly this freezing of cheese is why Lois is so slim and has the energy she does. Note to self, must freeze cheese if for no other reason than to keep me from eating it. Also, there is no way, and I mean NO WAY, I would fail to remember having an ice cream bar in my freezer. I can't even imagine discovering a long-lost ice cream bar that I forgot I had. Now back to her photo, notice how lovely the room behind is - teak dinette cabinet, Eames chair, slick sofa - I'm sorry Lois but I must insist on seeing more of your apartment.

Checkout my new shoes! I have been a fan of the Brazilian made Melissa shoes for a few years and when I saw these little cuties I jumped up and down right there in the store. Designed by the first woman laureate of the Pritzker Prize for architecture, Zaha Hadid constantly pushes the boundaries of urban design. They are plastic but don't let that worry you because they are truly comfortable and affordable! These Mary Janes are similar to the ones designed by Vivienne Westwood for Melissa only I opted for a wedge heel. Love the architectural lines, love the shine, and love, love, love colour.

Today I feel like baking cookies. I don't do this often- mainly because I am not a great baker - but I think I've pretty much perfected a recipe for rosemary shortbread cookies and soon it will be too hot out and so the idea of turning on the stove and sweating over cookie dough wont be that appealing. Up until this year my iris bulbs struggled to produce perhaps 4 stalks and then it would rain and those stalks would collapse into the mud. This year however they exploded. I now have dozens of big, beautiful irises and I can't stop looking at them. I have staked them, gently watered them, and was caught by the garbageman as I ran outside in my nightgown to chase squirrels away from them. I don't care, they make me smile.
